Home Groups. What is a home group? Well put very simply it is a group of people who meet together in a home. What makes home groups special are the relationships that develop within that group. When the group works well members feel free to open up about their faith beliefs and to engage in discussions in a comfortable non - threatening environment. Small groups provide an opportunity for people to really get to know each other. To feel free to share concerns knowing that the confidentiality pact of the group means whatever is said remains within the group. When problems arise the group are there to support one another. The leader or leaders with input from the group decide what they are going to study. At the moment several groups are using one of the York courses, my own group are studying “Faith in the Fire”. Another group are doing their own study of the book of Joshua and one of their leaders has prepared the material used. Another group are using one of the Lifebuilder studies, they have chosen Hebrews. Sometimes a video or DVD is watched and discussion follows. All groups have a time of prayer often focusing on the needs within the group. Some groups especially those lucky to have a musician as a member will have a time of praise. Groups either open with refreshments or conclude and one group I have visited had a break half way through for a drink and a piece of cake. Social events are organised and at this time of year plans for meals to celebrate Christmas or the New Year are underway. When home groups work well the results are there for all to see, numbers grow and firm friendships are formed. Are you still uncertain about joining one? You can call or e-mail me and discuss your concerns. You don’t have to commit yourself, pop along and join a group for a session and see what you think. What I can promise is that if you find a group that suits you, you won’t want to leave.
